Refuge of Light

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? -Psalm 27:1

When my kids were young, one of their favorite activities was to play outside in the dark with flashlights. They loved to play all types of games; battle games, nerf wars, hide & seek, and chase. All was well as long as they had the security of the flashlight. But when the light was lost or the batteries were drained, it was the end of the fun. They did not enjoy the time in the darkness without the refuge of the light.

This contrast between light and darkness is a reality for followers of Christ. We know it well…Darkness is the world that we once walked (Isaiah 9). Because of the darkness in the world, the Father sent his son Jesus to be the light of the world (John 1). Light is a picture of the salvation the Lord Jesus accomplished in His death and resurrection (John 8:12). Light is also a picture of the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God (Psalm 119:105). Continually, we are reminded of the home found in the light and our pursuit and proclamation of it.

I love this beautiful picture that King David gives us here in Psalm 27. He reflects on the confidence the light has in his walk with the Lord. This illumination not only drowns out his fear but also reminds him of his stronghold. “Stronghold” is a word that we don’t use often today. This word can be more applicable when defined as “refuge” or “fortress.” The Lord is my refuge!! The Lord is my mighty fortress!! When we walk in the light, we walk in a fellowship of “refuge.” This “refuge” is the “light of the world;” Jesus. What a beautiful promise from our Lord.

What are practical ways you are walking in the light today? Do you have things present in your life that are of darkness? What prevents you from bringing those things to light? In the refuge of light, we are truly free. I encourage you today to “walk in the light, as he is in the light (1 John 1:7).”

I love you and consider it an honor to serve as your pastor.

Blessings,

Bro. Kris
